Minister Wang Wentao met with Jean Lemierre, chairman of BNP Paribas

On March 23, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao met with Jean Lemierre, chairman of BNP Paribas, and discussed with him the development of BNP Paribas in China, and trade and economic relations between China and France, and between China and the EU at large.

Wang Wentao reaffirmed China’s commitment to high-standard opening-up by improving business environment, steadily expanding institutional opening-up in the financial sector, and facilitating cross-border investment and financing. He encouraged BNP Paribas to take the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations as an opportunity to further unlock the Chinese market, share opportunities in China’s high-quality development, and deliver mutual benefits. He expressed China’s willingness to address the differences in China-EU trade relations through dialogue and cooperation, and hope for BNP Paribas to play a positive role in this regard.

Jean Lemierre said that BNP Paribas is one of the first foreign financial institutions to enter China after reform and opening-up, and has continued to deepen its bond with the Chinese market in the past 40 years. He expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with China and provide better services for Chinese clients. He also said that as the French chair of the China-France Business Council, BNP Paribas will push for dialogues between China and the EU to properly address the differences in bilateral trade relations.
